“Put the DLC out of your mind,” a friend recently told me, as I hit him up for more Elden Ring tips. 

He knew why I was playing 2022’s fantasy role-playing game Elden Ring. 

And he knew that, at best, I was playing in denial.

Elden Ring has a massive new expansion called Shadow of the Erdtree that’s out today, and I had hoped that I could catch up and be ready to play it. 

No chance. I' was only nine hours into the base game.

Along the way, though, I was reminded what makes these games amazing. It’s not the challenge. It’s all the help—including wise counsel from friends over text message—that you may get because of it.
