I had an argument with a friend after the first movie that said something similar. He, and others, vehemently defended it saying "it was just for kids, and to just have fun." I have no issue with that concept, but I wondered why it couldn't be more like a Pixar movie that did a great job on 2 levels, rather than just one

Sounds like the second movie is more of the same. We're going to see it on Sat and I'm sure it will be fine, but really hoped for more

Interesting! The first film had a very rough hero arc for Mario, but little development for anyone else. When I compare it to the hot pot luck of the Minecraft movie, which was wild and terrible and daft enough to be cult, it’s just sugary porridge.

Sounds like the first movie! Also sounds like the games! I just finished playing Super Mario Galaxy 2 for the first time last week and as in most Mario games, the story is meaningless. There's zero reason to read even one word of dialogue--the plump purple star guy says some silly things here and there, but it's not like there's character development or anything.

So my expectations are already very low! I'd love for these movies to deliver The Lego Movie experience and be actually good stories, but I'm also okay with them being lightweight reference-fests. That said, my kids are older now and have not expressed an urgent need to see this in the theaters, so I'm happy to save the $75 (movie theaters are expensive these days y'all) and wait for streaming.

I maintain that these movies should be 80 minutes, have little to no dialogue, and go all-in on the animation and music. I don't need a Mario movie to have themes or character development, I just want it to evoke the feeling of playing the games.

Shame to hear about Luigi not getting much spotlight, I was hoping Charlie Day would get more material to work with, I enjoyed all of his scenes in the first one.

Overall, would you say this movie is worth seeing at all if you don't have kids and just want to chuckle at some cheap references? Me and the SO went to see the first one in theaters and it was an ok experience for a couple of younger millennials but not much more. We basically saw it because we wanted to hit the movies and not much else of interest was playing at the time. Kind of in a similar boat right now, maybe Nintendo is onto something by insisting on April debuts lol

What did you think of "Hoppers" by comparison? 🤔

Didn’t see it

Reading the reviews and reactions (from adults) online has given me more entertainment than the movie ever could

Frozen looking like arthouse cinema is so funny to me and i believe it. In terms of animated movies I have never liked Illumination’s stuff
