I love this story. Walking around the big convention DragonCon in Atlanta a decade ago would fill up your StreetPass faster than you could possibly play through the games. It was really fun. I bet this could remain a trend within video game conferences if you made a push for it.

I'm really compelled by the fact that this is a peer-to-peer system, and therefore durable to the whims of a company not wanting to pay for server upkeep. That feels rare and special, and worth preserving in spirit.

I wonder if the Playdate can do something like this...

There are still StreetPass meet-up groups and events, so there probably are still ways to predictably get a bunch of tags. But you can't buy the games anymore, which puts a damper on things for those who might be curious about more than Find Mii and swapping puzzle pieces.

And, yeah, would be neat if PlayDate could. Those systems are pretty rare, too.

Surely there's a way to just do this with phones!

The fact that you're not aware of phone games that do this is very interesting. I would have expected this to have been done by now in a cool way. Perhaps the OSes make this difficult to implement.

In case anyone's curious, I asked in the Playdate dev forums if a StreetPass-like function would be possible, and apparently not in its current design: https://devforum.play.date/t/can-a-game-be-active-while-the-device-is-sleeping/17415/2

The first detail there, that it's single-threaded, is a big hurdle. No "background tasks".

I would love if Nintendo had some Streetpass successor in the next Switch. I would gladly carry around a joycon or something like the Pokeball Plus for it to work

I use Netpass, which sets up a bridge to other Netpass locations to simulate local Streetpass connections. It works pretty well! https://gitlab.com/Sorunome/3ds-streetpass There are a bunch of similar tools that turn your wifi connection into a Streetpass hotspot.

Right. I've seen some spoofed SpotPass services cropping up as well, in the wake of Nintendo shutting down its servers. It's cool to see the community try to keep this going. Of course, there's nothing like it working as intended, but that comes down to Nintendo's unexplained decision to drop even rudimentary support for this kind of tech from the Switch.

I’ve just downloaded thrones of decay (DLC for TW:W3) and probably gonna get Manor lords at the end of May.
